Incontinence prevalence

Incontinence is common, but it isn’t normal. 1 in 2 women will suffer from bladder leakage at some point in their life, often caused by stress urinary incontinence (SUI).

  • On average, women wait 6.5 years after having symptoms to see a doctor
  • Less than 50% of women with bladder leakage discuss their symptoms with their doctor

For men, urinary incontinence affects 1 in 10, with rates rising for those over age 60.  The most common cause of SUI in men is prostate cancer treatment.

In addition, an estimated 29.8 million U.S. adults aged 40 and older have bothersome OAB symptoms, and fecal incontinence effects approximately 1 in 12 adults worldwide.

Incontinence support at Boston Scientific

Clinical investment

We‘re committed to supporting evidence-based medicine throughout the urological field, including assessing the efficacy, safety, and quality of life outcomes of artificial urinary sphincters. Through AUSCO, a single-arm, prospective, multi-center study, Boston Scientific evaluated the AMS 800 in men with primary stress urinary incontinence. In this prospective trial, the AUS allowed most men to achieve total continence with a serious adverse event rate of 15%.1

Additionally, our pelvic floor products are documented in more than 100 publications to date. The ARTISAN-SNM is one such study. The international, multicenter, prospective study evaluated the safety and performance of the Axonics SNM System™ as an aid in the treatment of symptoms of urinary urgency incontinence in 129 study participants.2
