Expanding Access to Esophageal Stents in Africa

East Africa has one of the highest rates of esophageal cancer in the world and most patients there present with advanced disease. To help reduce their suffering, doctors have collaborated to bring esophageal stents and endoscopy training to local hospital services in the region.

About the African Esophageal Cancer Consortium

African Esophageal Cancer Consortium (AfrECC) facilitates collaborations to coordinate etiologic and molecular studies of esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC) in East Africa. The consortium addresses the need for more research in this high-risk region. AfrECC seeks to build clinical capacity in the region to improve outcomes for early detection, treatment, and palliation of esophageal cancer. AfrECC also raises awareness of ESCC through education and advocacy.
