Who are interventional pain specialists?
Interventional pain specialists are physicians with advanced training in the evaluation and management of chronic pain using minimally invasive procedures. They aim to provide therapies that help relieve pain and reduce the patient’s dependence on prescription pain medication. Training backgrounds may include anesthesiology, physical medicine and rehabilitation, neurology, or neurosurgery.
They collaborate with referring physicians to:
- Evaluate patients with persistent or complex pain
- Assess whether interventional treatment options may be appropriate
- Coordinate care across specialties
When referral may be considered
Referral to an interventional pain specialist may be considered for patients who:
- Have chronic pain lasting longer than three months
- Have not achieved adequate symptom control with conservative therapies
- Experience pain-related functional limitations
- Require evaluation for non-pharmacologic pain management options
