At Boston Scientific, we are in the business of advancing science for life—for people of every background, color and creed. Racism in the United States and around the world has led to systems of inequity and deeply ingrained, long-standing divisions in society.

In 2020, the challenges brought on by the coronavirus pandemic disproportionately affected communities of color and were underscored by civil unrest. As a result, we committed to investing in a $3.5 million multiyear external strategy in the United States to combat inequity, systemic racism and social injustice in our communities.

Our work is focused on five pillars that are intended to:

  • Create a deeper awareness of racism and its impact on communities.
  • Advocate for anti-racist policies and practices that support equity and inclusion.
  • Empower key partners to take action in the fight against racism.

I Believe I Can

Boston Scientific employees virtually read and discussed author Grace Byers’ “I Believe I Can” with the Boys & Girls Clubs of Boston. Afterwards, the children danced along to a routine inspired by the book and received a copy to take home.

MGH Institute

MGH Institute

Boston Scientific donated $110,000 to Massachusetts General Hospital’s Institute of Health Professions to create the Boston Scientific Health Equity Scholarship endowment to help increase diversity in health professions.

These scholarships will be awarded annually to four graduate-level health care students of color committed to health equity and tackling health disparities in vulnerable communities. The first four recipients were selected in Spring of 2021. Additionally, Boston Scientific will provide these students with the opportunity to shadow employees at our Marlborough site to continue developing our pipeline of diverse talent.

 

Accelerating Our DE&I Progress

Our combating racism strategy complements our internal diversity, equity and inclusion (DE&I) programs, which encompass long-standing initiatives to prevent and address discrimination and racism in our workplace.

We took steps to accelerate our DE&I progress by offering:

  • Unconscious bias training that is now required for all employees.
  • Expanded DE&I training opportunities to develop our leaders as inclusion champions, topics include microaggressions, modeling inclusive behaviors, the history of racism, allyship and how to move from being “color blind to color brave.”
  • New educational resources, including an anti-racism website for all employees.
  • Candid dialogues about race and identity, with more than 200 hours of Real Talk conversations that reached thousands of employees.
  • Additional opportunities for our employee resource group members and leaders to connect with senior leaders and share perspectives and insights.
As we make progress on our strategy, we will share our results and assess how to further expand this work. It is critical that we do our part to create a better future for all.
