Peripheral artery and vein interventions support

Varithena®️ (polidocanol injectable foam 1%) varicose vein treatment.

Understanding your treatment

Varithena®️ polidocanol injectable foam 1% is an FDA-approved prescriptive medicine used to treat varicose veins caused by problems with the great saphenous vein (GSV) and other related veins in the leg’s GSV system. Varithena improves symptoms related to or caused by varicose veins, and the appearance of varicose veins. Varithena is an effective, gentle varicose vein treatment that can help restore your sense of well-being and is an alternative to surgery.

After your procedure

If your doctor decides to treat your GSV with Varithena, here’s what to expect after the injection and beyond:

  • While allergic reactions are rare, a health care professional will watch you for signs of an allergic reaction for at least 10 minutes following your procedure.
  • For the first 48 hours, continually wear the bandages. Do not take a shower or bath and keep the bandages dry.
  • Keep post-treatment bandages dry and in place for 48 hours. At 48 hours, remove the bandages, but continue to wear compression stocking(s).
  • For the first 7 days, do not participate in strenuous activity.
  • For the first 14 days, wear a compression stocking day and night.
  • For the first 28 days, walk daily for a minimum of 10 minutes. Avoid sitting for long stretches of time such as long car or plane rides.
  • Most people only need a single treatment. Additional treatment may be required, and will be advised by your doctor.

Knowing the side effects

Varithena is a prescription medication, so it’s important to be aware of any possible side effects that could arise. The most common side effects are leg pain or discomfort, injection site bruising or pain, and potentially serious blood clots in the leg veins. These are not all of the possible side effects of Varithena. Talk to your doctor about your particular health conditions and risks.

Minimally invasive, maximum results

In clinical studies, the majority of patients treated with Varithena experienced relief in symptoms including heaviness, achiness, swelling, throbbing and itching after just one treatment. The clinical studies also found that the majority of patients experienced improvement in vein appearance in assessments by both patients and physicians.¹
