Overcoming Challenges in Biliary Stricture Management

Evidence-Based Technologies for Consistent, Effective Biliary Drainage

Hurricane-dialation-ballon

Effective management of strictures requires adaptable solutions. Inadequate dilation or stenting can lead to complications, repeat procedures, and longer hospital stays.

For patients, such setbacks can lead to a more challenging treatment journey, diminished quality of life, and reduced survival, particularly in those with unresectable malignancies. For healthcare systems, they place additional pressure on resources, impacting operational and financial performance.

At Boston Scientific, our range of versatile solutions has been designed to simplify biliary drainage and stricture management in complex endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP) procedures.1-4

Supporting First-Time Procedural Success in Biliary Stricture Management

Combining advanced dilation balloons, reliable plastic and metal stents, an ablation tool and innovative sampling tools, the portfolio supports first-time procedural success across advanced biliary interventions.

Balloon Dilation

While balloon dilation is a key component in the endoscopic management of biliary strictures, purpose-built devices can support effective use, even in cases involving particularly tight or complex anatomy.

The Hurricane™ RX Biliary Balloon Catheter offers several features that directly support controlled dilation in this setting, including a low‑profile balloon shaft and tip designed to reduce resistance, increase pushability, and lessen trauma during advancement.

Its stainless steel stiffening stylet provides additional support and control, while the RX catheter design incorporates a guidewire locking mechanism that allows the physician to secure the guidewire position and maintain stable access throughout the procedure.

The dilation balloon is available in a range of sizes to facilitate appropriate selection based on patient anatomy and stricture size and to support stability during dilation.

Biliary Stenting

Recognising that endoscopically placed stents have become the standard of care for biliary drainage, we offer a wide range of options, allowing you to select a stent that is right for the patient and their unique stricture.

WallFlex™ Biliary RX portfolio

Designed to support real‑world clinical challenges and building on a legacy of proven endoscopy advancement, the WallFlex™ Biliary RX portfolio offers predictable placement and patency to help minimise unplanned patient interventions. Their malleable construction further supports reliable placement, even in tortuous anatomy.5,6

The WallFlex™ Biliary RX portfolio includes:

Radiofrequency Ablation

Habib™ EndoHPB Bipolar Radiofrequency Catheter enables targeted ablation of malignant or benign tissue within the biliary or pancreatic ducts. Indicated for endoscopic biliary drainage or decompression prior to stent placement, or for clearing an occluded stent, it supports restoration and maintenance of ductal patency.

Pre and post ablation assessment can be performed under direct visualisation with the SpyGlass™ DS System, enabling precise evaluation of tissue response and ablation margins.

Essential Diagnostic Tools

The RX Cytology Brush is a double-lumen wireguided catheter for the collection of cells and to obtain a cholangiogram in the biliary system. It features a reinforced metal tube handle for dependable actuation, a distal radiopaque marker for clear fluoroscopic positioning, and an open channel that enables fast, efficient guidewire exchange.
