Data-Driven Preoperative Counseling for Male Stress Urinary Incontinence

Multiple factors – including the degree of leakage – contribute to the severity of male stress urinary incontinence, as well as the likelihood of successful surgical treatment. We drew on our 10-year experience in AdVance™ sling placement, and created the Male Stress Incontinence Grading Scale (MSIGS), to produce an objective decision support aid for both patients and providers. The MSIGS Nomogram combines patient-reported daily pad use, history of pelvic radiation, and in-office standing cough test graded by MSIGS to predict the probability of sling failure. This easy-to-administer tool has been a welcome addition to our practice, resulting in better procedure selection and markedly improved sling success rates.
