BackStop™ Gel: Making Cases More Predictable
The BackStop™ Gel, a next generation antiretropulsion device, is a water-soluble polymer that forms a plug in the ureter. It is reverse thermosensitive, meaning at room temperature it is a soft, injectable gel and at body temperature it increases in viscosity to form a plug. The BackStop Gel is designed to prevent stone migration during ureteroscopy and percutaneous nephrolithotomy (PCNL) procedures, a common challenge for urologists.

Transforming the treatment of severe asthma
The Alair™ Bronchial Thermoplasty System is the first and only FDA-approved device for treating severe asthma in adult patients who continue to experience symptoms despite the use of inhaled corticosteroids and long-acting beta-agonists. The Bronchial Thermoplasty procedure works in an entirely different way to provide long-term reductions in asthma attacks, by safely reducing excess smooth muscle tissue in the airways.

Protection without touching the heart
The S-ICD® System is the world's first and only commercially available subcutaneous implantable defibrillator (S-ICD) for the treatment of patients at risk for sudden cardiac arrest (SCA). It sits entirely just below the skin without the need for leads to be placed into the heart, leaving the heart and blood vessels untouched. This is an alternative to transvenous implantable cardioverter defibrillators (ICDs) that require leads to be placed in the heart.

"The ENERGEN ICD saved my life."
ENERGEN™ Implantable Cardioverter Defibrillator (ICD) rescued Bachok after sudden cardiac arrest and reduced the number of future operations he will need for battery replacement. In some Asian countries, Brugada syndrome is the second most common cause of death in young people, after car accidents. This syndrome can cause life-threatening cardiac arrhythmias. Bachok was fortunate; he received the ENERGEN ICD before an untreated arrhythmia occurred, which could have taken his life.

"I am so grateful for my new life."
Since Karen had the Genesys HTA™ System procedure, she's always on the go. Before the procedure, she had a limited life during her monthly cycles because of extremely heavy bleeding. She was always weak and tired, and spent a lot of time on the couch, waiting for that week to be over so she could spend time with her husband and daughter. Now she takes high-impact Zumba classes, and is able to jump up and down without having embarrassing accidents.

Dancing Helps Fund Tricycle Park for the Disabled
Galway employees danced their way to funding Ireland's first tricycle park for people with disabilities. In addition to the ballroom dancing competition, highlights of their 30+ fundraising activities included a sponsored carwash and a 3-mile race, raising more than $70,000 to build the park. The tricycle park will enable people with disabilities, who might never have ridden a bicycle, to have an ordinary recreation experience with their families.

"Providing patients with a complete educational experience"
As a patient advocate and educator, it's important to Barbara that patients have what they need when they go home after a procedure. Because patients get online for information when they get home, she is determined to provide it digitally. And by embracing technologies like Facebook, she can provide a complete educational experience where patients are looking for it, and where they are looking for other people with the same condition.

"It's very simple and I'd be happy to walk you through it."
Mike wants to be able to answer patients' questions right away. When they call Patient Services, he helps them understand their devices, troubleshoot their equipment or help set it up. He is passionate about patient education. Patients contact Patient Services because they're fearful, says his colleague Kari. They have a piece of metal in their chests, and want to know that it will work. Her goal is to get information to patients before they have a device.

"A spark of an idea emerges that gives you that passion"
The spark of a new idea might come from collaboration with physicians or from members of his cross-functional team, says John Sherry, Director of Research and Development for Women's Health. His team develops products for less invasive procedures than traditional surgical repair, and seeing a new product successfully used for the first time provides the passion to go after the next challenge.
