Percutaneous Transluminal Angioplasty (PTA)

Percutaneous Transluminal Angioplasty (PTA) can be performed to treat vessel narrowing. A wire is passed from the femoral artery in the groin (or, at times, from the radial artery or brachial artery in the arm) to beyond the area of the artery that is being treated. A balloon catheter is advanced over the wire to the segment that is to be treated. The end of the catheter contains a small folded balloon. When the balloon is inflated, it compresses the plaque and stretches the artery wall to expand, improving blood flow.

For more than 25 years, Boston Scientific has set the world standard for balloon angioplasty technologies, paving the way for the development of products that have improved the lives of millions of patients.

From standard angioplasty balloons for all your peripheral applications to innovative therapies such as microsurgical dilatation and CryoPlasty® Therapy, Boston Scientific delivers the technology and expertise you need and expect from an industry leader.

The significance of these breakthroughs and the ongoing pursuit of the next leap forward are what drives us to maintain our leadership role.

Balloon Angioplasty

0.014" and 0.018 Low Profile
0.014"/0.018" low profile crossing balloons promote easier insertion and withdrawal, making them ideal for carotid, renal and infrainguinal procedures. Includes over-the-wire and rapid-exchange platforms.

0.035" Standard
0.035" standard workhorse balloons combine deliverability and trackability in a broad size matrix for versatile clinical performance in the peripheral vasculature.

0.035" High Pressure
0.035" high pressure balloons resist deformation at high pressure – concentrating maximum dilating force at the lesion site for predictable results. Ideal for use in resistant lesions in hemodialysis access management (HAM) and calcified arterial lesions.

0.035" Large Vessel
A full range of large vessel, noncompliant balloon catheters deliver strength that facilitates procedures performed in the femoral and iliac arteries.

Microsurgical Dilatation

Microsurgical blades called atherotomes are mounted to the balloon surface to score lesions and allow dilatation of even the most resistant lesions with the least amount of dilating force, resulting in less vessel trauma.

CryoPlasty® Therapy

The PolarCath™ Peripheral Dilatation System delivers cryo therapy and is designed to initiate both mechanical and biological responses in order to produce beneficial vascular effects. CryoPlasty Therapy, through the use of the PolarCath Peripheral Dilatation System, combines a unique application of cold therapy with angioplasty for the results you want now and the benefits you may need later.
