Pericardiocentesis

Pericardiocentesis involves the use of a needle to withdraw fluid from the pericardial sac, which is the membrane that surrounds the heart. The procedure is performed to remove fluid that is compressing the heart, or the fluid may be evaluated for diagnostic purposes.

Pericardiocentesis Overview

Pericardial effusions can often lead to cardiac tamponade, a condition where the accumulation of pericardial fluid and an increase in intrapericardial pressure produces cardiac chamber compression. This in turn significantly hampers ventricular filling and compromises stroke volume. During this life-threatening emergency, Pericardiocentesis is frequently required. When seconds count, a pre-assembled pericardiocentesis kit can assist medical personnel in this procedure.

Boston Scientific offers the PeriVac™ Kit, a Pericardial Fluid Aspiration Procedure Kit. This kit contains all of the instruments and supplies in one pre-sterilized package.
