Coronary Intravascular Ultrasound (IVUS)

Intravascular ultrasound (IVUS) allows physicians to see images inside the heart and coronary arteries to assist with diagnosis. The primary benefit of IVUS is that it offers a tomographic, 360-degree view of the arterial wall from the inside, allowing a more complete and accurate assessment than is possible with angiography.

With IVUS, a tiny catheter is inserted into the heart or into a coronary vessel where high-frequency sound waves reflect off tissue or vessel walls. The reflected sound waves create a cross-sectional image from within the vessel or heart to aid in visualizing vessel and heart structure. IVUS technology also provides physicians with a better understanding of blocked vessels, which allows for proper selection and placement of stents and other devices to restore blood flow at the site of the blockage.

Boston Scientific’s iLab® Ultrasound Imaging System delivers an excellent IVUS image. Installed directly into the cardiac catheterization lab or radiology suite, the iLab System enables physicians to readily incorporate IVUS technology into their everyday procedures.

In addition to the iLab System, Boston Scientific also offers extensive training and education with its iLearn™ Education Series.
