CONTAK® CD CRT-D Study

Status: Completed in 2001

The first study to demonstrate the benefits of CRT combined with ICD therapy, enabling a single device to treat two clinical outcomes common to patients with advanced heart failure.

Results

Patients with NYHA Class III/IV and biventricular (BiV) pacing on demonstrated improvement in:

  • Peak VO2 (p = 0.003)
  • 6-minute walk distance (p = 0.029)
  • NYHA Class (p = 0.006)
  • Quality of life (p = 0.017)

Design

Two patient groups (1:1)

  • 1. BiV pacing on (CRT on)
  • 2. BiV pacing off (control)

Patient Population

  • NYHA Class II–IV
  • LVEF ≤ 35%
  • QRS ≥ 120ms
  • 581 patients at 47 U.S. centers

Clinical Relevance

  • Combined endpoint of all-cause mortality, HF hospitalization and VT/VF requiring intervention

First study to evaluate the benefits of Cardiac Resynchronization Therapy combined with Implantable Cardioverter Defibrillator therapy, enabling a single device to treat two clinical outcomes common to patients with advanced heart failure
  • Sudden Cardiac Death associated with tachyarrhythmias and worsening symptoms
  • Exercise capacity due to diminished pump function
