On behalf of Boston Scientific, thank you for taking the time to join us today for this momentous occasion. The groundbreaking ceremony this morning marks the commencement of construction for our first regional manufacturing hub in the Asia region.
Before I go into an overview of this new facility, let me give you a quick background on Boston Scientific.
A global medical technology leader for more than 35 years, Boston Scientific advances science for life by providing a broad range of high performance solutions that address the unmet patient needs and reduce the cost of healthcare globally.
Our products and technologies are used to diagnose or treat a wide range of medical conditions, including heart failure, digestive, pulmonary, vascular, urological, women’s health and chronic pain conditions.
Our team of approximately 25,000 employees globally, fuels this work with a shared belief in our mission to deliver truly transformational solutions, for patients through meaningful innovation. As of 2015, we are extremely proud to have helped more than 22 million patients worldwide, and we continue to pioneer new therapies to address unmet clinical needs in areas including stroke reduction, Parkinson’s disease, heart failure and liver cancer.
Ladies and gentlemen,
Today, Boston Scientific is present in over 100 countries worldwide and we supply medical devices to over 15 countries in the Asian region. We have had an active local presence in Malaysia since 1997, working alongside hospitals and physicians to bring innovative medical solutions to meet patient needs across Malaysia.
We are currently involved in physician training and education, and work very closely with the Ministry of Health, National Heart Centre, hospitals and support numerous training activities. We’re also proud to say that one of our programmes aimed at training endoscopic nurses, endorsed by the European Society of Gastro Nursing Association (ESCGNA) is an industry benchmark.
Establishing a manufacturing facility in Malaysia is part of our goal to grow our medical solution manufacturing footprint in Asia. Located at this 20-acre site in the Batu Kawan Industrial Park here in Penang will be our first facility in the Asian region earmarked to begin operations in the fourth quarter of 2017. It will initially focus on manufacturing products for interventional cardiology and endoscopy, and is definitely in line with our continuous aim to transform lives around the world, through innovative medical solutions.
With a well-established manufacturing infrastructure, as well as a growing medical device sector, Malaysia was identified as an ideal location for us to set up our first facility in Asia. It clearly cements our commitment to supporting a robust healthcare industry in Asia and locally here in Malaysia.
Ladies and gentlemen,
At Boston Scientific, we care deeply about patients and communities. Working in healthcare is not just a job for us, it’s a calling. We’ve committed to this profession because we’re all striving to be a part of something that makes a real, meaningful difference. No matter how close our employees are or far you are from the patient, there is a deep sense of personal pride and fulfillment, derived from contributing to the improvement and saving of peoples’ lives.
The construction of this new facility here in Malaysia, demonstrates our dedication to human life, and commitment to create tailored solutions that make the greatest difference, – to the individual patients as well as the healthcare ecosystem in Asia.
Before I end, I would like wish all the best to the Boston Scientific team in Malaysia as they move into the construction and commissioning of our first regional manufacturing hub in Asia.
I would once again like thank our special guests this morning for taking the time to make this ground breaking ceremony a success!
