Overview

A cardiac resynchronization therapy defibrillator (CRT-D) is a small battery-powered device containing a tiny computer. It monitors your heart and sends electrical signals to help the heart muscle contract. This device can also store information about your heart's condition. A CRT-D provides two primary therapies:
  • Cardiac resynchronization therapy (CRT)
  • Implantable cardioverter defibrillator (ICD) therapy
  • CRT therapy.

The CRT part of the therapy treats heart failure by helping your heart to pump better. It delivers electrical impulses to the right and left lower chambers (ventricles) to help them contract at the same time. It also helps restore proper timing of the heart's contractions so that the heart may fill with blood and work more efficiently.

    ICD therapy.

ICD therapy is delivered only when the device detects a dangerously fast rhythm. If a rapid rhythm occurs, the ICD can deliver life-saving therapy. Very small, specially timed pulses called antitachycardia pacing (ATP) to full-energy shocks may be delivered. These therapies return your heart rhythm to normal. Without treatment for an abnormal rapid rhythm, you could be at risk for sudden cardiac death.
