As one of the largest Latino behavioral health agencies and the only dual language diagnostic provider for Spanish speakers in Minnesota, Comunidades Latinas Unidas En Servicio (CLUES), of St. Paul, Minnesota, plays a key role in advancing research, discussions, and solutions for issues faced by the Latino community. Now in its 27th year, CLUES continues its role as a community builder and catalyst for change with its mission to enhance the quality of life of the Latino community in Minnesota. In 2007, CLUES provided services for more than 29,722 clients.
Funding from the Boston Scientific Foundation supports the Family Centric Health Promotion Program of CLUES, a community-based participatory research and action project, which offers an innovative approach to improving the lives of the Latino community through community health workers. CLUES recruits and provides training for Latino youth and adults to become bilingual community health workers to educate their peers, families, and communities about the adverse health effects of tobacco use, obesity, and diabetes as well as treatment and prevention options. These Promotores de Salud, or community health workers (CHWs), as well as Jóvenes de Salud (youth community health workers) provide culturally competent and linguistically appropriate health promotion and prevention programs to thousands of individuals annually.
