Since 2005, Boston Scientific employees in Galway, Ireland have nominated a new charity each year and embarked on a number of fundraising initiatives in support of their chosen cause.
Autism was chosen as the Galway 2009 Charity of the Year, which ran from April 2009 to June 2010. The fundraising target for the year was €50,000, which employees hoped to raise through a variety of fun and innovative fundraising events. Ábalta, a school for children with Autism, was selected as the recipient of the funds.
Founded in 2001 for the specific education needs of children diagnosed with autism, Ábalta is regarded as a center of excellence and is the only Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) school in the West of Ireland. It currently operates out of two schools in Galway city that serve eighteen children. One of the organization's key goals is to build a custom school with the capacity to serve 30-40 children.
The Big Pedal to Paris
Several Boston Scientific employees from Galway joined forces with their colleagues in the UK and the Ireland Sales Team to Pedal to Paris as the final fundraising event for Ábalta. The grueling trip took the group from the West of Ireland to Paris, France, covering more than 350 miles in less than five days.
The Big Pedal to Paris brings the 2009 Galway Charity of the Year fundraising total for the year to a record €100,000.
Since 2005, Boston Scientific employees have raised more than €400,000 for local Galway charities. Organizations employees have supported within the local Galway community include Console, Galway Rape Crisis, National Breast Cancer Research Institute, Down Syndrome, Cystic Fibrosis and Ábalta.
