Boston Scientific is proud to be the recipient of the Marlborough, Massachusetts Chamber of Commerce's 2008 "Green Business Award," just one year after receiving Marlborough's "Business of the Year Award." Boston Scientific is committed to making more possible in the communities where we live and work, and one of these commitments is to minimize our impact on the environment.
Our Marlborough facility employs more than 750 people on approximately 100 acres of green space. During 2004 and 2005 the site underwent an extensive renovation that earned a "Green Building" rating from LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) in recognition of the manner in which the project considered stewardship of the environment.
Some of the unique aspects of the energy efficient building management system, which contributed to the LEED award, include intelligent heating and cooling geared toward minimizing energy use, while contributing to the efficiency of the business. The building also features low-flow or no-flow water-use devices, white reflective roofing to reduce the work load of our air conditioning system, and extensive use of sustainable or recycled building materials.
Boston Scientific is also a leader in managing our waste through a robust recycling program. Our Marlborough site alone achieved a 44 percent recycling rate in 2008, resulting in the recycling of 123 tons of paper, cardboard, wood, metal and plastic.
This award demonstrates how our commitment to excellence extends beyond our customers, employees and shareholders and can reach our communities through active environmental stewardship.
