As Boston Scientific works to reduce its environmental footprint, a broad range of recycling programs have been implemented across the organization. At the corporate level, Boston Scientific has implemented a Recycling Index (RI) metric for all operating sites to measure and improve recycling of solid waste. We have been successful in these efforts, surpassing our goal by recycling over 50 percent of the Company’s solid waste since 2007. Some of the materials we recycle include paper, cardboard, wood, metal, plastics, used electronics and waste food.
At many Boston Scientific facilities, grass-roots recycling programs are being implemented with great enthusiasm and success:
- At the Quincy, Massachusetts Global Distribution Center, recycling programs for wood and cardboard have been supplemented to include shrink-wrap and plastic banding materials, raising their RI to 89 percent.
- The St. Paul and Maple Grove Minnesota facilities have sponsored employee recycling days for consumer electronics and plastic bags to complement existing programs to recycle paper, cardboard, plastic and glass bottles.
- Several Boston Scientific facilities, including Galway and Cork in Ireland, and Fremont, California, have incorporated a food scraps composting program, which includes paper cups and food containers.
